Wigan Borough Community First funds our new Getting On project

Funding from the Path to Purpose fund means we can launch Getting On: practical, person-centred support for people who don't yet feel ready for work, training or volunteering.

TalkFIRST has received funding from Wigan Borough Community First (WBCF) in the Path To Purpose fund to launch Getting On, a new project providing practical, person-centred support to people who may not currently feel ready to move into employment, training or volunteering.

The funding will allow TalkFIRST to work closely with local people who are facing challenges such as low confidence, stress, difficult relationships, parenting pressures, social isolation or uncertainty about their skills and future.

Helping people overcome the barriers behind unemployment

Finding a job is not always as simple as finding the right vacancy.

For many people, there are other challenges that need to be addressed first. Low self-esteem, poor emotional wellbeing, conflict at home or a lack of support can all affect someone’s ability to take their next step.

Getting On has been created to provide the time, space and practical support needed to work through those barriers. Rather than pushing people towards employment before they feel ready, the project will help participants build stronger foundations and make progress at a pace that is right for them.

Support shaped around each person

Thanks to the funding from WBCF, TalkFIRST will be able to offer flexible support based on each participant’s circumstances, strengths and goals. This may include:

  • Building confidence and recognising existing strengths
  • Improving communication and managing conflict
  • Support with relationships and parenting pressures
  • Developing routines and everyday life skills
  • Reducing isolation and connecting with the community
  • Exploring volunteering, training and employment
  • Supporting emotional wellbeing
  • Advocacy and practical help with meetings or appointments

Most participants will work with the TalkFIRST team for around four to eight sessions. These will usually last between one and two hours and can take place weekly or every other week.

Support will be available at Ashland House, Ince Community Centre, Sunshine House and other suitable community venues across the borough.

Start with a conversation

There are no complicated referral forms or unnecessary hoops to jump through. People can contact TalkFIRST directly, or they can be introduced by another organisation already supporting them. They do not need to know exactly what help they require before getting in touch.

Sometimes the first step is simply sitting down over a brew and having the time to properly talk.
